This months Author interview we are chatting to Demetria!
Tell us a bit about your book
I actually have 5 books published but the book that is the dearest to my heart is A Healing Journey:Journal to Self Love. This was my very first self published book. This book is designed to take people on a healing journey from sexual abuse and rape. My goal when writing this book was to help people through the healing process and learning to love themselves again after the most damaging events in life.
What would say is the genre for your book
The genre is Self-Help
Where did the inspiration come from?
I was severely sexually abused as a child and ultimately it ended in rape. This was an inspiration as my healing journey was very long however, my ultimate inspiration was my children, who also experienced the horrific life altering abuse at the hands of their father and his brother which also ended in rape. I wrote this workbook for my children in hopes that what helped me through the healing process would also help my children. Through the whole process I decided to publish the workbook with the mindset that if it helped even just one person then it was well worth it.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
The title for me was a non issue. I knew from the beginning that it would be Journey to Healing and later added the journal to self love because that is exactly what is is.
How long did it take you to finish writing the book before the first edit? How many drafts were there in total?
I wrote this book over the course of one single weekend. There was only one draft – I wrote from the heart and personal experience. Through the years I have updated the workbook with new book covers and just basic edits.
How did you celebrate being published? Did you have a launch party?
I honestly did not have alot of support in the writing of this book so there was no celebration to speak of.
Would you care to give us an extract?
This book and journal is designed to help you through the recovery process after abuse. Many people who suffered abuse throughout their lives have no idea where to start in rebuilding their lives and identities. This book was written by an abuse survivor who has worked each step outlined in this book. It is not an easy journey but one that is needed to move forward with your life. It is a journey to self-love.
How do you beat writer’s block? Any tips?
In the books that I have published thus far I have not dealt with writer’s block because I write straight from my heart and soul. I do write for other people on a regular basis and writer’s block is a regular event, when it happens I have to walk away for just a bit and get a fresh perspective before beginning to write again.
Do you have any hobbies apart from writing?
Photography, Hiking, Camping, Fishing, Creating digital art
When you write, do you consider yourself to be a plotter or a pantser?
I am absolutely 100% a Panster. No matter what writing endeavor I take on I find it more beneficial to my writing process to just take it as it comes.
Do you have any advice for fellow writers?
I think my biggest word of advice would be to always write with heart and soul. Walk away when you need to and come up for air. Enjoy your creative soul completely.
If your book became a film- who would you pick to play the main characters?
Since this a workbook/journal I would not see it being a film but if my story was ever made into a film I would only want my youngest daughter to play the main character (me) because she knows me the best out of anyone in this wonderfully wide world we live in.
I see you have new work in progress- care to tell us about it?
I have a few book ideas bouncing around in my head at the moment but haven’t actually put any pen to paper yet.
Lastly, where can readers find you and your book on the internet?
This particular book along with my others can be found on Amazon at this link
Demetria Polston is a gypsy soul, a dreamer and so much more. She enjoys writing self-help books and workbooks for about 10 years now. Her little family was going through some pretty tough times which is truly what sparked my first book “A Healing Journey; Journal to Self Love”. She had all this personal knowledge of healing process so That book came pouring from her soul. It was from writing that first book and watching her little family through their journey that she knew she wanted to help people.
Thankyou so much Demetria for your insightful answers and courage!
