Week 53- 100 word count challenge- http://jfb57.wordpress.com/2012/08/06/100-word-challenge-for-grown-ups-week-53/

Prompt-… would seven prove to be too much? …..

In a sleepy town, a church bell rang to awaken its people to the popular day of the year- the autumn fair. But there is one resident who was already awake- Pearl.  She was up early baking, determined that this year she will win the cake competition. Her rival Maureen from the Womans Guild keeps beating her every year- last year it was with her lemon drizzle.

Pearl decided to bake her classic Victoria sponge but with a twist! She added seven teaspoons of ginger and mixed spice and wondered- would seven prove to be too much for everyone’s taste?

Thinking of Maureen’s grin- she thought not!

I really like how simple this story is, even while it incorporates some deeper feelings: Pearl’s rivalry with Maureen, Maureen’s subtle need to be the best all the time. Mostly, though, I like the upbeat voice of the piece. Nicely done. 🙂

  6. Good one; that would be some spicy cake!
